Countries of the World
In Geography we have been working on projects about countries.
We were given a list of categories to research including Capital City, Population, Currency, Language, Famous People and Surrounding Countries.
Each group enjoyed presenting their project to the class. All the children included art, posters, interesting facts and some brought in actual items from the country to show to the class.

Magnificent Magnets
In our science lessons we have been looking at and discussing magnets and investigating whether materials are magnetic or not.
We found out that many things are magnetic, such as paper clips, scissors and safety pins . Paper, pencils and crayons however, are not magnetic.
We looked at how magnets can attract and repel metals. We saw that magnets have a north side (red) and a south side (blue). We experimented with the magnets and paperclips.
We explored around the classroom to see if we could find anything else magnetic.

Arctic Animals
This January we have all been very busy learning about arctic animals and the areas surrounding the Arctic and Antarctica.
Penguins
We have been learning facts about penguins in the book 'The Emperor's Egg' by Martin Jenkins. We read about how the male penguin stands in the freezing cold with an egg on his feet for two whole months, keeping it warm and waiting for it to hatch. The male emperor does this while
his mate is off swimming and catching loads of fish. We enjoyed exploring the life of a penguin in Antartica.
We made our very own penguins
Fire Brigade Visit
As part of learning about people in the local community our class had an exciting afternoon learning about what it is like to be a firefighter. The children got the opportunity to sit in a fire truck and use the water hose. We learned about the dangers of fire and thought about how we can stay safe.
We have been learning about light this month.
In Science we explored natural light, artificial light, electrical light and celebrations of light.
We read the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, by Ronda and David Armitage. This brilliant book tells the story of Mr Grinling, the lighthouse keeper, and the trouble his wife has getting his lunch across from the mainland.
We even designed our own lighthouses in art.
'The Day the Crayons Quit'
Our colourful class had great fun reading about how the crayons have had enough!
Duncan’s crayons all take offence at the way they are treated and write strongly worded letters to their owner about how the feel..
Red is tired, beige is bored, and black is just misunderstood. Some are tired and over worked, (poor Blue…there’s only so many skies and seas he can cope with…
Each child thought about the story and created crayons and posters of their own.

Handa's Surprise
We really enjoyed reading 'Handa's Surprise'. We have been learning about Kenya and where Handa lives.
We have been learning about food and healthy eating this month. We looked at the fruit that Handa was going to bring to her friend Akeyo - the spiky topped pineapple, the juicy oranges, the creamy avocado, the tangy passionfruit, the sweet guava and the red and green mango.
In art we made each of these fruits using crepe paper. We then tasted the different fruits from Handa's basket and discussed their likes and dislikes. The fruit smelt delicious, we couldn't wait to taste it.

We then looked at all the animals that live near Handa's village - the cheeky monkey, the hungry ostrich, the colourful parrot, the long-necked giraffe, the stomping elephant and the graceful antelope. We painted each of these animals for our classroom display.
